After decades of decline, new research shows an unexpected change in American churches. Attendance is rising, younger adults are returning, and spiritual openness is growing. Could we be witnessing the beginning of something much bigger?

For years, Christians have heard the same story: churches are shrinking, younger generations are walking away, and faith is disappearing from American life.

But suddenly, the numbers are telling a different story.

New research from the Hartford Institute for Religion Research found that median in-person worship attendance at U.S. congregations increased for the first time in 25 years. Median weekly attendance climbed to 70 people per congregation, surpassing the pre-pandemic median of 65. The study examined more than 7,400 congregations nationwide.

Pandemic Impact on Congregations

And that is not the only sign.

The American Bible Society recently reported that approximately 8 million more Americans are attending Christian churches at least occasionally than two years ago. Gen X and Millennials both showed increases in attendance.

Among younger Americans, something particularly interesting is happening.

Barna reports that one in three Gen Z and Millennial adults now says they are attending church more frequently than they were a year ago. Prayer is one of the leading reasons they are coming.

Barna has even described what is happening among younger generations as a resurgence in church attendance, with younger adults beginning to challenge assumptions about who is showing up to church in America.

So what is happening?

Maybe Americans are discovering again that technology cannot replace community.

Politics cannot replace purpose.

Success cannot replace peace.

And culture cannot answer the deepest questions of the human heart.

There comes a moment when a generation begins searching again.

Searching for truth.

Searching for belonging.

Searching for God.

Christians should not look at these numbers merely as interesting statistics. This is an invitation.

Revival does not begin when somebody announces that revival has arrived.

It begins when ordinary people pray.

When families return to church.

When fathers open their Bibles.

When young people surrender their lives to Christ.

When believers stop watching from the sidelines and begin living their faith publicly, courageously and consistently.

Scripture reminds us:

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

Perhaps America is beginning to draw near again.

But the next chapter will not be written by statistics. It will be written by us.

So tomorrow morning, don't simply read another story about revival.

Go to church.

Take your children.

Call the friend who hasn't attended in years.

Invite the neighbor who has been going through a difficult season.

Arrive early. Worship. Pray. Open your Bible. Meet someone new.

And if you've been away from God yourself, perhaps tomorrow is the day to come home.

Something is moving in America.

The question now is whether we will simply watch it happen — or become part of it.
