Bush Daughter Backs Talarico, Paxton Needs Every Vote

Published

Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, has contributed $2,500 to a political committee supporting Democrat James Talarico in Texas’s closely contested Senate race. Meanwhile, her father recently helped Republican fundraisers who notably excluded Ken Paxton. The developments are renewing questions about longstanding divisions within the Republican Party.

It was only $2,500. But the donor’s last name has carried political weight in Texas for generations.

Federal campaign-finance filings show Barbara Bush donated that amount on September 23 to Lone Star Rising PAC, an independent political committee supporting Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico. Talarico faces Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton on November 3.

The donation was first reported by Houston Public Media and subsequently confirmed by Fox News. Barbara Bush, 44, is an executive at the NBA and the twin sister of television personality Jenna Bush Hager.

The contribution was Barbara Bush’s personal decision, not an endorsement from former President George W. Bush. Nevertheless, its timing and a separate Republican fundraising controversy have turned a modest donation into a national political headline.

Why $2,500 Matters

Lone Star Rising is a major outside-spending organization supporting Talarico. Independent expenditure committees can accept substantial contributions but cannot coordinate their electoral spending with candidates.

What makes this contribution particularly interesting is its visibility.

Rather than donating through a nonprofit organization that might not publicly disclose its contributors, Bush gave to a committee required to report its donors to the Federal Election Commission.

Texas campaign-finance attorney Andrew Cates told Houston Public Media that the contribution, although relatively small, could offer insight into where certain figures associated with the Republican establishment stand.

However, Bush has not publicly explained her motivation.

The Republican Fundraiser Without Paxton

The story becomes more interesting when examining another Bush family development.

In September, former President George W. Bush participated in a Dallas fundraiser hosted by Republican Senator John Cornyn for Maintain the Majority, an organization supporting Republican Senate candidates.

CBS Texas reported that fundraising events in Dallas and Houston collected approximately $1.1 million for six Republican candidates.

Ken Paxton was not among the beneficiaries.

The political history surrounding that omission is difficult to ignore.

Paxton defeated Cornyn in the 2026 Republican Senate primary. Four years earlier, Paxton also defeated George P. Bush, the former president’s nephew, in the Republican primary for Texas attorney general.

Those contests add another dimension to the Bush family's complicated relationship with President Donald Trump's political movement.

Yet there is no confirmed evidence that personal grievances caused Paxton's exclusion. Other Republican candidates were also absent.

Could This Affect November?

Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office in more than three decades. A Democratic victory in this Senate race would represent a historic breakthrough.

A recent University of Texas poll placed Talarico at 50% and Paxton at 47%, a difference within the survey's margin of error.

One $2,500 donation will not decide Texas's political future. But the combination of Republican rivalries, political fundraising, and the Bush family name reveals how complicated party unity has become.

With Election Day approaching, the question remains: Can Republicans overcome their internal divisions before voters decide who represents Texas in Washington?
